Purpose/Summary Statement:
Outlines the steps to Install Microsoft Silverlight and Configure Microsoft Edge to work with the legacy Silverlight application.
Scope
This procedure applies to all Milrose employees who require Silverlight for uploading or managing documents within legacy web applications that depend on Silverlight functionality. The DOB site is one of those applications.
Procedure:
Step 1: Determine user need
Step 2: Download and Install Silverlight
- Go to the IT Software’s folder and download Silverlight
Step 2: Open Edge in Internet Explorer Mode
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click the three dots (…) at the top-right corner → select Settings.
- In the left panel, click Default browser.
- Under Internet Explorer compatibility, set:
- Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode (IE mode): → Allow.
- Restart Edge when prompted.
Step 3: Add the Webpage to IE Mode
- Open the webpage that requires Silverlight.
- Click the three dots (…) menu again → choose Reload tab in Internet Explorer mode.
- Edge will reload the page and display an IE logo next to the address bar.
- To make Edge always open this site in IE mode:
- Click the IE icon → toggle Open this page in Internet Explorer mode next time → Done.
- Alternatively, go back to Settings → Default browser → Internet Explorer mode pages → Add and paste the webpage URL.
Step 4: Refresh the Page
- Go to the Silverlight-required site.
- Press F5 or click the Refresh icon (?) next to the address bar.
- If prompted to run or enable Silverlight, select Allow or Run.
Step 6: Create a Local Folder for Silverlight Uploads
Important: Silverlight does not work with OneDrive-synced folders. Users must create a local folder on their PC for uploading documents. Files in this folder will not be backed up automatically.
- Navigate to a location on your local drive, such as C:\Users\[YourUsername].
- Right-click → New → Folder.
- Name the folder something descriptive, e.g., Silverlight Uploads.
- When uploading files through Silverlight, select this local folder as the source.
- Advise users to use this folder solely for uploading and downloading files. Files stored here will not be backed up automatically, so do not use it for long-term storage.
Accounts / Access:
To perform the steps in this SOP, you will need:
- A Milrose network account with local administrator privileges (for installation).
- Access to the IT Software shared folder containing the Silverlight installer.
