Purpose/Summary Statement:

When updating Windows, users may receive the message “Some settings are managed by your organization.” This procedure removes stale or corrupted Windows Update policy entries so updates can resume normally.

Scope

This applies to all Milrose Windows 10 / Windows 11 systems that were previously managed by LLOYD.

Procedure:

OPTION 1 – Delete Windows Update Policy Registry Key (Preferred)

  1. Close all applications
  2. Click Start
  3. Type cmd
  4. Right-click Command Prompt → select Run as administrator
  5. In the elevated command prompt, run the following:

reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate" /f

  1. Run GPupdate /force
  2. Reboot the computer
  3. After restart, confirm Windows Update now shows normal options

OPTION 2 – Reset Local Group Policy (More Aggressive Option)

Warning: This will revert all local group policy changes on the device, not just Windows Update related ones.

  1. Close all applications
  2. Click Start
  3. Type cmd
  4. Right-click Command Prompt → select Run as administrator
  5. In the elevated command prompt, run each of the following one line at a time:

RD /S /Q "%WinDir%\System32\GroupPolicy"

RD /S /Q "%WinDir%\System32\GroupPolicyUsers"

gpupdate /force

  1. Wait for the gpupdate to complete (should show “Policy Update Complete”)
  2. Reboot the computer
  3. After restart, confirm Windows Update settings now allow updates normally

Accounts / Access:

To perform the steps in this SOP, you will need a Milrose network account with local administrator privileges.
