Purpose/Summary Statement:
This document explains how to remove unwanted, lingering un-synched MS Teams folders from Windows File Explorer. Use this process when Teams and File manager synchronized folders, remain in File Manager after they are properly removed / un-synced from OneDrive.
Scope
Can be used on systems in all Milrose companies.
Procedure:
To remove lingering un-synced Teams folders from File Explorer, first Stop Syncing the specific team/channel via the OneDrive settings (taskbar icon > Gear > Settings > Account > Stop sync), then delete the local folder from File Explorer (right-click > Delete) after confirming it's just a local copy. Ensure the OneDrive cloud icon isn't spinning before deleting the local folder to avoid deleting from the cloud.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Check Sync Status: Look for the blue OneDrive cloud icon in your Windows taskbar (bottom-right). If it's spinning, wait for it to fully sync.
- Open OneDrive Settings: Right-click the OneDrive cloud icon and select the gear icon, then Settings.
- Go to Account Tab: In the OneDrive settings window, click the Account tab.
- Stop Syncing the Team/Channel: Find the specific Team or Channel you want to remove from the list and click Stop sync next to it.
- Confirm Folder Removal: Open File Explorer, find the folder you just un-synced, right-click it, and select Delete. This removes the local copy without affecting the cloud version.
- Restart OneDrive (Optional but Recommended): If issues persist, you can fully exit OneDrive, then restart it to clear any remaining placeholders.
Important Notes:
- Files On-Demand: Use the Files On-Demand feature (in OneDrive Settings > Sync and backup > Advanced settings) to only download files when you open them, saving space.
- Placeholder Files: After stopping sync, you might see cloud icons or just placeholders. Right-click them in File Explorer and choose "Free up space" to remove the local copy if needed.
Accounts / Access:
